Tsunami Youth in Transition Results

Results from the Tsunami Youth In Transition Project (YITP) are surpassing expectations. Among those who have participated in the project:

  • 44 per cent have enrolled in vocational training courses like photography, nursing, gem cutting, computer training and motor mechanics
  • 10 per cent are pursuing higher education
  • 13 per cent are employed or self-employed.

YITP participants are leaving the program with a strong sense of community responsibility. More than half are involved with community development groups. Examples include a local children's society, tree-planting project and drug prevention program.

This project is particularly effective at helping young women get a foothold in the job market. To date, females represent:

  • 53 per cent of those engaged in vocational training
  • 68 per cent of those registered with JobsNet
  • 67 per cent of the youth who are active in their communities.

Teenagers leave the YITP with increased confidence and motivation, a more positive outlook on life, and clear objectives about their future. Here is what they're saying about this project:

  • "YITP turned a new page in our lives."
  • "I was worn out by my past life, and had no aim, but now I have an aim and that gives me satisfaction."
  • "Before the program, I didn't have a goal, but now I do and I know how to go for it."
  • "YITP chased our fears away."
